Freeport, TX June 3-4 YFT Galore!
After foregoing the Sunday T-storm debacle, re-scheduled for Monday and had to get a whole new crew except Bull was able to re-arrange his schedule and make it out (Gluconda (Stephen) and Boy897 rounded out crew). This, despite Lee's truck dying on I-45 enroute to Freeport - oh well, rent a car and continue on down! That's dedication.
Seas were a bit confused and east wind gave us a little spray but we made it out at 30-32 mph. Stopped for snapper about half way out and got a limit in less than an hour plus a scamp and 5 kingfish (4 released). No weed lines past 35 miles but some looking to form further out as we came home this morning...
Another 2 hours travel and start jigging and popping although not marking much on the fish finder. After about an hour, Stephen hooks up about a 40# yft on a green Maguroni and in the box. I think he got the next yft, which was an ~80#er, nice fish. Then it was my turn with a 35#er. Stephen then had a run with a couple more 40-45#ers, and then I got a couple in that same range (pink Dandy swimbait (H4L). Clearly the green maguroni and pink dandy swimbaits were hot, but so were the OTI purple komodos and wahoo tuna hunter jrs (please send promotional replacements to my home address! lol - these got tore up!!!).
Not sure if jigging would have really worked as we each only dropped a couple times and then it was popping and swimbaits from there on out. I had 2 monster strikes on poppers that ripped a 100yds and I fought for 20 minutes each (big fish, I realistically pegged at about 90-100#s given runs and difficulty lifting using a powerful RacePoint 200 rod (thank you Covi - I needed it last night). One pulled the hook and as I was winding the popper up from about 150ft, a big bft hits it (no not the same fish)! The other, my 65# line broke. My back aching (and so was Stephen's by now), I decided to chunk and hooked up about a 50#er. Back out, and major strike, pulled a hundred yards off of ~18# drag. told the guys to give me the Smitty belt and harness and went to work. About 30 min later, see color and notice that a 10ft, 450# shark took a 1/3 of my fish off just by the sickles. Pi$$%d me off after that battle (and the toll the 2 on poppers had taken on my back). Think it was a little over 100, nice thick fish. What do you think?
Oh yea, Lee had hooked that shark and after a major run, it quit playing and he had to dead lift it about 100ft with his Stella locked down and using his Racepoint 250 rod. Finally had to hand line it in the last 25ft and we salvaged as much of leader as possible. We thought it was dead, but as soon as line was cut, it swam away. Is there such a thing as a "possum" shark? In hind sight, I wish we'd a shot it, D#!& (just wishing).
Boy and Bull led the board on the 25-30# bft (must have had at least 10 that size), and they also got a couple yft to the boat for quick releases after we filled our 4 man limit.
Some of the gear used, Stella 18000 & 10000, Daiwa Dogfight, Black Devil 200, Race Point 200 and 250, Synit TP200, Talica 25 II - and that's just what I can recall! Lures, already mentioned.
All told caught, boated and/or released 17 yft from 30 - 80# (one missing 30# to the shark!), keeping 12. Lost about 10 more (did I tell you 2 of them were 100#ers on the popper, lol!). Almost forgot, 8 snapper and a grouper.
