Well, almost maybe - at least compared to what we've been doing!
Been watching the weather forecast since last week and wasn't sure whether a Thursday or Friday overnighter was going to deevelop. Had 2 different crews depending on the weather. Made the decision (Wed night) that Thursday night was the better choice and we would get back before the 4s that NWS was forecasting. Other models didn't have it getting worse than 3s until Friday, but after midnight.
So Tim (Tunasnatcher), Boy (Boy897) and Jr were all game. Got to the boat shed and a surprising 10+kt wind from the southwest. Good direction but higher velocity than fcst, hmmm....
Loaded and gassed up and left bridge bait with not another single boat trailer on the lot. Hmmmm.... Seas were 1 ft starting out and if a 2 footer showed its face the entire trip, I didn't see it. Stopped at Sunrise and caught several small AJs, and some halves, thanks to the sharks.
Continued to our tuna destination at 515 and started doing it all, jiggin, popping, and chunking. And nothing, until about 730. Tim gets hooked up on a Magaroni and I go to get the gaff when my chunk line goes off - double hook up. We get both the 60 - 65#ers in the boat, bleed 'em out and in the box. I think Boy hooks up next and it turns out to be a foul hooked bft. But he redeems himself right after with a 30# yft on the chunk (?). Tim hooks up a cuda and a 15 min surgery is required to save the magaroni. And, then a YFt, and then another cuda, and then another yft. And then Boy puts another one in the box on a popper, 60-65#s. So by 830 there were 4 in the box, by 1030, 6 yft and 2 chunk bft (and 2, 5-6ft cudas too, PITA!).
We threw everything we had at 'em from about 1030 to 0530 and if they were there (some blow ups), they ignored us. Until 530 when my chunk line goes off again and a very spunky 60# lights it up and we get her to the box. Jr hooks up next on a popper after popping his A#$ off all night! Not 2 minutes later, Tim hooks up on a chunk, another double. Get both of them in the box. The last 4 fish required us to shift fish and ice each time to fit them in. Pretty much chocker block full at 615 we start cleaning up and slowly motor in, speeding up as daylight increases.
9 yft, 8 from 60 - 70#s: 4 on the chunk, 3 on Magaroni's (Tim) and 2 on poppers. Tim had an all star day to include 4 nasty dispatched cudas.
Tried to take my customary cleaning table photo but camera batteries were dead after just one trip replacement. Must be leaving them on. Email is down for maitenance so can't post the photos that were being sent to me. I'm sure Boy and Tim will provide additional action photos.
Tight lines and fair seas to all.
